Secondary Curriculum
Pupils in Key Stage 3
Pupils in Key Stage 3 will continue to be taught most subjects in their classrooms by their class teacher. We continue to follow the National Curriculum and the pupils will have access to a broad and balanced curriculum, that is differentiated according to their needs and ability. Pupils will engage in English, Maths, Science, PSHE (including Relationships & Sex education), ICT/Computing, Art and Design, Music, PE, Modern Foreign Languages, Design and Technology (inclusive of Food Technology), History, Geography, Careers Education and Religious Education.
Pupils in Key Stage 4
Pupils in Key Stage 4 will continue to receive a broad and balanced curriculum, differentiated according to their needs and ability. English, Maths, PSHE (including Relationships and Sex education), Careers Education and PE will always be included in the timetable, but there can be increased flexibility and pupils may choose to focus on specific subjects, such as Art and Design, and their timetable can be adjusted accordingly. We encourage pupils to develop areas where they may have specific talents and interests.
Pupils in Key Stage 4 will be working towards a range of qualifications, including GCSEs, BTechs, Open College Network qualifications and Functional Skills qualifications.
"Classroom visits showed pupils enjoying their growth in confidence as learners. Expectations are high… (and) pupils rise to the challenges posed by set texts such as Shakespeare's "a Midsummer Nights Dream". The school's mathematics curriculum is equally ambitious…(and) pupils are now making the progress they need to make up the ground lost prior to joining the school."
Ofsted Report, Maypole School (Sunbury), June 2024
Key Stage 5 / Post 16
Pupils in Key Stage 5 / Post 16 will have an individualised programme. This may be similar to pupils in Key Stage 4, in that they will be working towards a range of qualifications.
Where appropriate, pupils may have a programme that includes a part-time placement at a local College, supported by Maypole School staff, where they can undertake a range of vocational qualifications such as Hair & Beauty; Mechanics or Animal Care. The remainder of their programme will focus on Maths, English, PSHE and Careers Education. Pupils will also have the option to participate in a range of off-site activities such as horse riding, gym or swimming.
"Across the school, any pupils who struggle with reading are identified and receive support to catch up. As a result, pupils are reading and using and applying their mathematical knowledge with more confidence and fluency. Pupils are also developing more positive attitudes towards this aspect of their education."
Ofsted Report, Maypole School (Leigham Court), June 2024
Interests and talents
Whatever the age group of pupils, we will support their interests and talents. Pupils will have the opportunity to access activities such as horse riding and dance for example, and these can be included in their weekly timetable.
Secondary Curriculum Map
The different components of Maypole’s curriculum for secondary pupils are shown in the table below. As above, this list is not exhaustive; and the availability of some of the non-academic options is dependent on appropriateness, practicality, and on what will best meet each individual pupil’s needs. But everything mentioned below is certainly possible.
